On 30 September we organised the annual From Molecule to Business meeting at Pivot Park with the theme: Drug Discovery re-invented!

We discussed the importance of new techniques like novel #RNAtechniques#nanotechnology and #crisprcas9. These techniques increasingly allow us to design molecules with a pre-determined function & use instead of time consuming trial & error.

The Covid-pandemic has shown that the development of new techniques are important for drug discovery. A good example is the recent development of RNA-based vaccine. But every few years a fundamentally new technique will be on the market to improve discovery and development. Novel Technologies
Jos Oomen from HFML/FELIX will explain how with advanced technologies we are able to determine the precise structure of molecular structures of for example biomarkers and how this data can be used to optimise drugs discovery. Venture Challenge winner Fall 2019 BIMINI Biotech (Maurits van den Nieuwboer) will explain their novel approach to limit the growth of cancer cells.
 
Hybrid event
We expect the RIVM guidelines will allow us to host a physical meeting at Pivot Park in Oss with networking/drinks/snacks afterwards. The event will be streamed online as well. We will wait for the latest update from the upcoming press conference on September 20 and will contact you afterwards to check your preference (live/online).

New start-up Patholyt will bring AI research into pathology diagnostics

Patholyt is on a mission to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence in pathology diagnostics and improve the chances of cancer patients worldwide. Patholyt is a spin-off from Radboudumc, a frontrunner in computational pathology research.

Pathology is pivotal in the diagnostic process of many diseases such as cancer. For more than 100 years pathologists have been using the optical microscope for tissue examination. The field of pathology is now challenged by the world’s shortage of pathologists, and the growing requirements for efficiency and consistent quality.

A revolution in the field

Recent progress in artificial intelligence, imaging, and high-performance computing has unlocked a revolution in the field: AI-powered Computational Pathology. Patholyt will bring research algorithms into clinical practice to both speed up and improve the quality of pathology diagnostics.

NWO gaat twee consortia financieren met een looptijd van tien jaar. Het Radboudumc neemt deel aan het ROBUST-consortium, dat bestaat uit 17 AI-labs waarvan er 8 zijn gericht op de gezondheidszorg. Het Radboudumc leidt 5 van deze 8 labs. “Een unieke kans om onze internationale toppositie in AI voor de gezondheidszorg in Nijmegen verder uit te bouwen”, zegt Bram van Ginneken, hoogleraar AI in het Radboudumc.

We are so glad that the current RIVM guidelines allow us to organize a live meeting at Novio Tech Campus Nijmegen with networking/drinks/snacks afterwards. Taking into account 1,5 meter distance, there is a limit to the number of participants that we can receive at NTC (40 persons). Crowdhelix – Find partners for collaborative projects on the Crowdhelix platform

To support researchers with finding European partners and creating a network around Horizon Europe calls, Radboudumc and Radboud University have joined the Crowdhelix community. The Crowdhelix platform offers researchers to share their expertise and get in touch with European colleagues that share their interests.

Are you, or do you know, someone that is interested in participating in European collaborative projects but not yet has the network to start? Then joining the Crowdhelix platform is the perfect way to meet researchers and companies that are looking for the same thing. Digital Health is thriving in the Nijmegen region

Digital Health is thriving in the Nijmegen region, where it contributes to better care and health and also creates jobs. The corona pandemic underscores the importance of digital solutions, such as image calling and telemonitoring, for care and health. To bring developers and end users even closer together, The Economic Board and the Radboudumc are introducing the Interactive Digital Health map.

Nice ecosystem

Nijmegen is known for its large healthcare sector: no less than a quarter of the working population has a job in healthcare or a sector directly related to it. Specifically for Digital Health, a lot of knowledge and skills (human capital) are present at the Radboudumc, the Radboud University, the University of Arnhem and Nijmegen (HAN) and the ROC Nijmegen. More than 50 companies are also active in Nijmegen and the surrounding area in the field of Digital Health. Various financing options exist for Digital Health innovations and business support is also available. So there is already a nice ecosystem in place that offers plenty of opportunities for further expansion.

Opportunities

Tom van de Belt, researcher at the Radboudumc and spearhead of Digital Health: “The Nijmegen region offers ideal opportunities to develop Digital Health products and services, anchor them in practice and then scale them up. That improves patient care and at the same time makes economic growth possible. Certainly in the areas of remote care, self-monitoring, wellness and education, and early detection with artificial intelligence, there is already a great deal of knowledge and experience in this region.”

Regional desires

Van de Belt mapped out the regional situation. It turned out that stakeholders do not always know how to find each other easily. Companies that want to test and validate their product in a healthcare institution, healthcare providers or researchers looking for a partner to develop their idea with, companies that want to bring in employees or students with specific Digital Health knowledge; there is room for improvement in these areas. Van de Belt also concluded that scaling up Digital Health innovations is difficult: “Acquiring a subsidy to develop the idea or carry out a pilot is often successful, but finding structural funding is much more difficult.”

Digital Health map

To encourage collaboration in the region and matchmaking between developers and users, the Radboudumc has developed an interactive Digital Health map with The Economic Board. This map lists Digital Health partners from the Arnhem and Nijmegen region. The map is continuously updated so that all players can be included. It is easy to pass on registrations via the map and the map can be found here.

The Economic Board previously developed the interactive map Lifeport: a digital map with interesting companies and organizations in Health, Hightech, Energy, Food and Sustainability. This map shows who is active in these sectors within the innovation network Lifeport in the Arnhem – Nijmegen – Wageningen region.

Only then can you estimate what their added value could be within the Health innovation chain of products and services. The Digital Health map of the region is one of the tools that can help parties along the way. In addition to information about what all the included partners have to offer, they can also indicate on the interactive map what needs or issues they have. We hope that this will help parties find each other more quickly, and in this way improve mutual cooperation within and outside the sector even further.”

SMB-meeting Validation of new technologies in healthcare

In healthcare we do not like to take too much risks. After all if something works properly or not, might make the difference between life and death. Therefore, validation of new technologies in the practice of healthcare is always key.
 
During this SMB meeting Remke Burie from the TechMed Centre/UT will talk about their approach to development and validation of new technologies and the importance of close cooperation with medical professionals.
 
Martijn de Groot from RadboudUMC Health Innovation Labs will talk about their approach to the development and validation of health innovations in close cooperation with patients and professionals.
 
We conclude the meeting with two startup entrepreneurs who will talk about their experience in relation to innovation in healthcare.
 
Physical event
If the RIVM guidelines allow it (and we have good hopes!) the meeting can be held at Novio Tech Campus Nijmegen with networking/drinks/snacks afterwards. We will keep you informed after applying. Taking account of the 1,5 meter distance, there is a limit to the maximum number of participants that we can receive at NTC (45 persons) and we will register you in the order of application. If a physical event is not possible, we will change to online.

Personalization key to sustainable healthcare

OnePLanet Research wrote a nice article on Chris van Hoof’s presentation at the previous SMB meeting:

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Or should we say ‘an app a day’ nowadays? Both, says Chris van Hoof at the SMB-meeting ‘Digital healthcare’ on March 4. Because both expressions hint at prevention or early capturing of health problems. And the app a day hints at close interaction with the user or the patient. Personalization is crucial to a sustainable healthcare system.’

Saving lives with a pump in the heart

Start-up CardiacBooster is developing a small but powerful pump that can pump blood through the groin of a patient’s heart. The device helps cardiologists in the critical phase shortly after a heart attack. A heart attack damages the heart muscle. In some patients (about 5 percent) this results in less blood being pumped around the body. The result is that organs receive too little blood. This can cause them to function less well. Sometimes, this can even be so bad the patient dies as a result.

Kind of balloon
“Our device works like a balloon that can suck in and push out blood,” says Daniël van Dort, inventor of the technology and Chief Science Officer and co-founder of CardiacBooster, a spin-off of the Radboudumc in Nijmegen. “You improve the strength of the heart with this pump and can pump more blood around.” People with a severe infarction for example, relatively often suffer kidney damage, requiring dialysis. By using the device, this kidney damage can be limited. This significantly improves the quality of life of these patients.

Simple insertion
There are other devices that can pump the patient’s blood. But they are relatively large for the amount of blood they can pump. “Unique to our device is that it is easily inserted into patients’ hearts via the groin,” says Van Dort.
The pump can be used there immediately. It can also be used preventively in patients who have a poor heart function and who have to undergo surgery. Van Dort: “You can prevent someone from going off the deep end and suffering damage to their organs because not enough blood is pumped around during the operation.”

Idea book
As a medical student, Van Dort was already fascinated by the workings of the heart. “In the lecture hall, I kept a notebook of ideas in which I wrote down medical problems that I wanted to solve. For example, during my studies I learned that people with a heart attack are given medication to limit the consequences. I found that fascinating: you are trying to solve a mechanical problem, a heart that is not working properly, with a lubricant. Couldn’t you make the heart work better? After my studies, I started to work on this. It literally happened at the kitchen table. So now, five prototypes later, we have a device that can tackle the mechanical problem much better. In addition to his work for CardiacBooster, Van Dort works as a researcher at the Department of Cardiac Surgery of the Radboudumc.

Best Startup
CardiacBooster was founded in 2018. Florian Ludwig from Thuja Capital hooked up as CEO. To develop the product, CardiacBooster received a financial injection from Thuja, the Radboudumc and the RedMedTech Discovery Fund in recent years. This is a fund for innovative start-ups in Life Sciences & Health in Gelderland. In 2019, CardiacBooster was named one of the ten best scientific start-ups in the Netherlands. The company is based at the Novio Tech Campus in Nijmegen.

First study in humans
At the moment, the pump is still being studied in laboratory animals. If all goes well, the first study in humans will take place next year. There are already ten people working at CardiacBooster and the company is looking for further funding. “I know a lot about how the heart works and how to make the blood pump around better. But if you really want to understand how it works, it takes a lot of time and money to research.” By 2023, CardiacBooster hopes to bring this innovation to the market, once approved.
